The Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is the new graphical subsystem in Windows Vista that replaces the old GDI graphical subsystem and makes many of the cool UI features possible. In addition, WPF provides the foundation for a new print subsystem that includes, among other things, support for better color management to allow high-fidelity color printing as well as support for printing advanced effects such as gradients and transparencies. And the key ingredient that ties WPF and print subsystem together is XPS.

WPF was initially released as part of .NET Framework 3.0. WPF is built on DirectX, which provides hardware acceleration and enables modern UI features like transparency, gradients and transforms. WPF also offers a new markup language, known as XAML which is an alternative means for defining UI elements and relationships with other UI elements.
WPF is included with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, and is also available for Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, and Windows Server 2003.

Go to the Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\MenuShowDelay. The default value is 400. Set it to 0 to remove the delay completely, but if you do that it will be nearly impossible to move the mouse fast enough not to activate All Programs if you mouse over it en route to your final selection. Pick a number that suits your style, make the change, and then test it until you find a good compromise between speed and usability.

Place Windows Kernel into RAM
It’s a given that anything that runs in RAM will be faster than an item that has to access the hard drive and virtual memory. Rather than have the kernel that is the foundation of XP using the slower Paging Executive functions, use this hack to create and set the DisablePagingExecutive DWORD to a value of 1.

Edit the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive to 1 to disable paging and have the kernel run in RAM

Perform this hack only if the system has 256MB or more of installed RAM!

Alter Prefetch Parameters
Prefetching (the reading of system boot files into a cache for faster loading) is a commonly overlooked component that can have a significant impact on system boot time. This tweak allows you to select which components will make use of the prefetch parameters. To see which files are gathered using each setting, clear the prefetch cache located at C:\Windows\Prefetch and then enable one of the settings listed in this hack. Clear the cache and repeat
for each setting.
Set the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher to 0 to disable prefetching, 1 to prefetch application launch files, 2 to prefetch boot files, or 3 to prefetch as many files as possible.

Disable 8.3 Name Creation in NTFS
Files that use the 8.3 naming convention can degrade NTFS drive performance.
Unless you have a good reason for keeping the 8.3 naming convention intact (such as if you’re using 16-bit programs), a performance gain can be achieved by disabling it.

Set the Registry DWORD key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Control\FileSystem\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation to 1. Exit the Registry
and reboot.

ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ သိပၸံ (Computer Science) ေလ့လာသူေတြနဲ႕ သတင္းနည္းပညာ (IT) ေလ့လာသူေတြအတြက္ အစီအစဥ္ဆြဲနည္း (Programming) သင္ခန္းစာေတြမွာ မပါမျဖစ္ကေတာ့ အခ်က္အလက္မ်ားကုိ စီျခင္း (Sorting) အစီအစဥ္ပါပဲ။ Sorting စီတဲ့ နည္းလမ္းစဥ္ (Algorithm) အမ်ိဳးေပါင္း ေျမာက္မ်ားစြာ ရွိတဲ့အထဲက Bubble Sort, Counting Sort, Insertion Sort, Selection Sort နဲ႕ Quick Sort တုိ႕ဟာ ထင္ရွားပါတယ္။ (စာေရးသူ အႀကိဳက္ဆံုးကေတာ့ Selection Sort ျဖစ္ၿပီး အေၾကာင္းရင္းကေတာ့ နားလည္ရလြယ္လြန္းလုိ႕ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။) ဒါေပမဲ့ လက္ေတြ႕ဘ၀မွာ အသံုး၀င္တာကေတာ့ နားလည္ရခက္၊ ေရးရတာ လက္၀င္တဲ့ Quick Sort ေလ။ ေရးလုိက္ၾကတဲ့ အစီအစဥ္ေတြတုိင္းမွာ စီစရာ (object, data type) တစ္မ်ိဳး ေပၚလာတုိင္း Quick Sort ကုိ တစ္ခါ ထထ ေရးရမယ္ ဆုိတာကေတာ့ လြန္လြန္းပါတယ္။ ဒါေၾကာင့္ C/C++ စံသတ္မွတ္ခ်က္မွာ Array အားလံုးကို စီႏုိင္ဖုိ႕ qsort ဆုိတဲ့ function ပါေနတာ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ဒီေဆာင္းပါးမွာ အဲဒီ qsort ကုိ အသံုးျပဳနည္းကို ေရးသားေပးမွာ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

qsort ရဲ႕ သတ္မွတ္ခ်က္မွာ အစီအစဥ္ေရးသားသူ (programmer) ဒါမွမဟုတ္ ကုဒ္ဒါကို ၿခိမ္းေျခာက္ေနတာကေတာ့ pointer ေတြပါပဲ။ ရုိးရုိး Data Pointer ေတြတင္မကပဲ Function Pointer ႀကီးပါ ပါေနေတာ့ Pointer ဆုိရင္ ေက်ာစိမ့္ေနၾကလူေတြ လန္႕ကုန္တာ မဆန္းပါဘူး။ ဒါေပမဲ့ အေက်ာသိရင္ လြယ္လြယ္ကေလးပါ။ qsort ရဲ႕ အဓိပၸါယ္ သတ္မွတ္ခ်က္ကို အရင္ၾကည့္ရေအာင္ေနာ္။

ပထမဆံုး return type ကေတာ့ ဒီ function ဟာ return မျပန္ပါဘူးလုိ႕ အဓိပၸါယ္ရပါတယ္။ ဆုိလုိတာက ေပးလိုက္တဲ့ array ကုိ စီပဲ စီေပးမယ္။ ဘာ ဂဏန္းမွ တြက္ၿပီး အေျဖမထုတ္ေပးပါဘူးေပါ့။

ပထမဆံုး parameter က စီရမဲ့ array ရဲ႕ ပထမဆံုးအကြက္ရဲ႕ လိပ္စာ (address) ပါ။ အမ်ားေၾကာက္တဲ့ pointer ေပါ့။ Array အားလံုးဟာ Fix Pointer ေတြ ျဖစ္တဲ့အတြက္ စိတ္ခ်လက္ခ်ပဲ array name ကုိ ျဖည့္လုိက္လုိ႕ရပါတယ္။

ဒုတိယ parameter ကေတာ့ Array ရဲ႕ အရြယ္အစား (size) ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ C/C++ မွာ Array ရဲ႕ size ကုိ compile-time/run-time check မလုပ္ပဲ ကုဒ္ဒါကပဲ အၿမဲ ကုိင္တြယ္ ႀကီးၾကပ္ရတာမုိ႕ ဒါကို ထည့္ေပးရတာပါ။ ႏုိ႕မုိ႕ရင္ ဘယ္ႏွခု စီရမလဲ မသိပဲ ျဖစ္ေနမယ္ေလ။ ကုိယ့္ Array မွာ Element ၁၀ ခုပါရင္ 10 လုိ႕ထည့္ေပါ့။ Variable တစ္ခုခု ထည့္လုိ႕လဲ ရပါတယ္။

တတိယ parameter ကေတာ့ စီခ်င္တဲ့ Array Element တစ္ခုခ်င္းရဲ႕ အရြယ္အစားေပါ့။ အဲဒါမွ အဲဒီ မွတ္ဥာဏ္တံုးႀကီး (memory block) ေတြကို ေရႊ႕လုိ႕ရမယ္ေလ။ ဒါလဲ မခက္ပါဘူး။ sizeof(element) လုိ႕ ေပးလုိက္ရင္ရပါတယ္။

စတုတၳနဲ႕ ေနာက္ဆံုး parameter ကေတာ့ နည္းနည္း ရွင္းျပရ လက္၀င္ပါတယ္။ ဒါဟာ Function Pointer ႀကီးျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ကုိယ့္ဘာသာကုိယ္ သတ္မွတ္ထားတဲ့ Element ေတြကို ႏိႈင္းယွဥ္ခ်င္ရင္ ဒီ Function နဲ႕ တြက္ဆုိၿပီး ေျပာရတဲ့ သေဘာပါ။ (ေနာက္တမ်ိဳးေျပာရရင္ အဲဒီ Function ႀကီးကုိ qsort ကေန လွမ္းေခၚမွာ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ အဲဒီ Function ႀကီးက qsort ဆီကုိ ေရွ႕ကေကာင္က ငယ္ရင္ အႏႈတ္ကိန္း၊ တူရင္ သုည၊ ႀကီးရင္ အေပါင္းကိန္း တစ္ခုခု return ျပန္ရပါမယ္။) အဲဒီ Function ႀကီးရဲ႕ ပံုစံကလဲ

Microsoft's Browser Best at Beating Malware

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) again trounced rival browsers in a test of their malware-blocking abilities, catching 81% of attack code-infected sites, according to a testing company.
IE8's improvement, and its dominance over competitors, could make some users reconsider their decision to abandon Microsoft's browser for one of its challengers. "Should people rethink that decision?" Moy asked. "By [this] data, absolutely."
While IE8 blocked eight of 10 of the malware-distributing sites that NSS included in its 12-day test, the nearest competitor, Mozilla's Firefox 3.0, caught just 27% of the same sites. Apple's Safari 4.0 and Google's Chrome 2.0, meanwhile, blocked only 21% and 7% of the sites, respectively. Opera Software's browser properly identified only 1%.
The tests did not include sites that launch "drive-by" attacks that don't require user interaction, an increasingly common tactic by hackers who often infect legitimate sites with kits that try a number of different exploits in the hope of compromising an unpatched browser or PC.
To defend against the kind of sites that NSS tested, browser makers have added anti-malware features to their software. Microsoft, for instance, has aggressively touted its SmartScreen Filter, a new malware-detection feature in IE8.

၄။ Font Embed in Browser

၂၀၀၉ font size က 54 KB ပဲရိွတယ္။ ၂၀၀၈ ကေတာ့ 336 KB ရိွတယ္။တနည္းေျပာရင္ font embed အတြက္ဆို ၂၀၀၉ က အမ်ားျကီး ပိုေကာင္းတာေပါ့။ 336 KB နဲ့ 54 KB ဆိုတာ 6 ဆ ေလာက္ ကြာတယ္။ ဒါေျကာင့္ ၂၀၀၉ ကိုေျပာင္းျခင္းအားျဖင့္ font embed အတြက္ အရမ္းသင့္ေတာ္တယ္။

၅။ Keymaster (normalization)

Unary Operators

Not all operators in mathematics expressions are binary operators. Some are unary operators.

As you may guess, a unary operator accepts only one operand.
The positive sign and the negative sign are each unary operators. They accept only one value when they do arithmetic.
The positive sign looks a lot like the addition operator. For example, consider this expression:

+2

Is read 'positive two'. It does not really mean 'add two'.

What is happening here from an expression evaluation viewpoint is that the value of two represented by the number 2 is accepted as a single operand by the unary operator, '+', and that operation produces a value of positive two.

But, of course, the value of two represented by the number 2 is positive to start with, so, this operation is not too exciting, (no pun intended).

Obviously, '+2' and '2' each represent the same value. So, one can say that an 'invisible' positive sign can be imagined before any number, (or variable or function, for that matter).

As mentioned above, the negative, (or opposite), sign is a negative operator. Consider this expression:

-3

Technically, here the negative sign operator accepts a value of three as its operand and produces a value of negative three.

Obviously, '-3' and '3' represent different values. There are no invisible negative signs in mathematics expressions.

These two unary operations, '+' and '-', have precedence over all binary operations. To see this, let's look at a situation which is often termed a 'double negative' or stated as 'two negatives make a positive'. Consider this expression:

3 - -2

In this expression there are two operators that look like this: '-'. They are not the same. The first one, (left most), is the binary subtraction operator. The other, (right before the 2), is the unary negative sign operator.

From an expression evaluation viewpoint, things proceed as follows. The negative sign operator has precedence over the subtraction operator, so it accepts operands first. It accepts only one operand, since it is a unary operator. It accepts the value of two and produces a value of negative two. Now, the subtraction operator gets its chance to accept values. It takes the three and from it subtracts the negative two. This produces five, represented by the number 5, so we can write:

5 = 3 - -2

Now, this expression also equals five:

3 + 2

Since two expressions both equaling five equal each other we can write:

3 + 2 = 3 - -2

Although the expressions to the left and right of the equal sign above produce the same value, they each have quite a different story going on regarding the interaction of operators and operands.

So, the positive sign operator is not the addition operator, and the negative sign operator is not the subtraction operator.

But they look so much alike! Or do they?

Actually, the positive sign operator is often differentiated from the addition operator by making it a bit smaller and lifting it up a bit, as in:

+2 + +3

That would read 'positive two added to positive three'.

A similar visual difference is often used for the negative sign operator and the subtraction operator.

What was written above in the 'double negative' discussion:

3 - -2

Is much more clearly written this way:

3 - -2

That makes it very clear that the negative sign is a different operator than the subtraction operator. This last expression would be read 'three subtract negative two'.

There is really no 'double negative' here. One operation is binary subtraction, the other is unary negation. The combination of these in like expressions may evaluate to a value equal to a similar looking expression involving an addition operator, and an addition operator may look like a positive sign, but it is really not the best mathematics to explain the fact that:

3 + 2 = 3 - -2

Using terms like 'double negative' or 'two negatives make a positive'.

So, is there ever a double negative or do two negatives ever make a positive?

Well, yes, if there really are two negative sign operators present, (and not one subtraction operator and one negative sign operator). Consider this expression:

Here there are two unary negative sign operators looking around, as we might say, for operands. They have equal precedence, so, which one accepts operands first?

Unlike the situation for binary operators where in situations of equal precedence evaluation proceeds from left to right, here, with unary operators of equal precedence evaluation goes from right to left.

So, the value of two is accepted by the right most negative sign producing a value of negative two, or the opposite of two. This value is handed over to the left most negative sign producing the negative of negative two, or the opposite of the opposite of two, which is positive two.

In this case, then, it is fine to talk about double negatives and say that two negatives produce a positive. Now, with complete clarity we can write:

+2 = --2

Collecting a few ideas about expression evaluation:

* There are binary and unary operators.
* Unary operators have precedence over binary operators.
* Resolutions regarding binary operations of equal precedence proceed left to right.

In Vista, the biggest change in the arrangement of a user's settings is the creation of the AppData folder. Furthermore, this AppData folder has three subfolders, Local, LocalLow and Roaming. As with Local Settings, a folder called Application Data exists in Vista for backwards compatibility with XP.

If you look closely at the icons under the Users folder, you will notice that some subfolders have a shortcut arrow. These arrows indicate a Junction point or Symbolic link. For ordinary mortals stick with the idea that these folders represent shortcuts, for example, the 'All Users' settings are now actually stored here --> C:\ProgramData. As far as Microsoft's technical explanation of Junction Points and Symbolic links, it was a case of 'Guy is reading, but Guy is not understanding'.

Fix corrupted user profile

Assume in this example that the username is 'atiensivu', the domain is 'staff', and the user profile is located in %systemdrive%\users\atiensivu. %systemdrive% is typically C: on standard Vista installs. Replace every instance 'atiensivu' with the username of the corrupt profile.

1. If you can log into the profile, make note of the %USERPROFILE% environment variable value. Most likely it will be 'C:\Users\atiensivu' or 'C:\Users\atiensivu.staff'. Logoff.

2. If you have logged in with the profile at any point since your last reboot or you suspect there are files in use within the profile, reboot. The important part is to make sure there are no open files within the broken profile directory.

3. Login as administrator or another account with local admin rights.

4. Run 'takeown /r /a /d y /f %systemdrive%\users\atiensivu'.

5. From %systemdrive%\users, rename 'atiensivu' to 'atiensivu.old'.

6. Within %systemdrive%\users, create a directory called 'atiensivu'.

7. Run 'takeown /r /u staff\atiensivu /f %systemdrive%\users\atiensivu'.

8. Run regedit and go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and delete the SID key for the corrupt profile. Easiest way to find the correct SID is to search from the 'ProfileList' key for the directory mentioned in %USERPROFILE% in step #1.

9. Logoff.

10. Log into the 'atiensivu' account. A new profile should be created. Copy over any files you might want from the old profile directory.

The 'takeown' commands might be overkill but I don't like getting permission errors.

Microsoft says it will introduce its new search engine within the next few days. The world's largest software company has called the project "Kumo."

Microsoft argues that if its search engine brings back more relevant results than Google or Yahoo! that people will eventually migrate to the "best" product. That may not be true. Google has become a habit for more than two-thirds of the people who use search engines in the United States. It is generally considered the best product, but in the final analysis that decision is subjective. Google is certainly the search program that gets the most positive votes if use means anything.

"Kumo" may be just as good as Google, although the largest search engine keeps improving and adding to its functions. It is far too early to tell whether Microsoft can pick up a single new user even if its product is 99% as good as Google in the eyes of most people who look for things online.

Loyalty is not always the by-product of function, although function often creates loyalty.

The trouble with the search business is that its future may have almost nothing to do with whether search results get more accurate. Google's information is already more than adequate for the huge majority of people who are trying to find information online. At some point, and that point has probably been reached, people cannot tell the difference between flying in an airplane that is at 32,000 feet and one that is flying 1,000 feet higher. The change in perspective means nothing to them. All they know is that they are as high as they have to be to get where they are going.

Change User Profile Folder Location in Vista

Moving my entire User Profile folder structure, including Default, Public, and any local users.

In my search for a solution, the only two easy ways I found to move the user profile directory locations from the system drive is to

Set the User Profile folder during setup using an unattended install file.
Move the individual folders inside your user profile, which can be done using explorer (which will update the registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders).

However, this was not good enough for me, I wanted my actual user profile folder to be moved to a seperate partition/volume, including registry settings. I discovered that it is not actually that hard, provided you’re comfortable with mass replacing registry keys and values.

Here is how I moved my user profile location. Please note that I wanted all of the profiles moved, included Public and Default, so some of these steps can be skipped if you do not want that:

Make sure you have a complete backup of your system!
Copy the original Default Profile directory to the new location (e.g. from C:\Users\Default to D:\Users\Default).
Copy the original Public Profile directory to the new location (e.g. from C:\Users\Public to D:\Users\Public).
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
Change the value of the Default key to the new user profile location (e.g. D:\Users\Default).
Change the value of the Public key to the new user profile location (e.g. D:\Users\Public).
Change the value of the ProfilesDirectory to the new user profile location (e.g. D:\Users).
At this point, you need to restart and log back in as a different user that has never logged in before and therefore does not have a profile created. In my case, the Administrator user had never logged in before so I enabled it so that Administrator could log in and used that. You can enable Administrator login by loading Computer Management and then go to User Accounts, edit the properties for Administrator, and then uncheck Disable Login.
After logging in for the first time with the new user account, you will see “Creating Desktop” and other things like that while Windows is creating your profile. Note that the new profile should be created in the new location.
After logging in, try to close as many applications as possible. This will prevent most files from being locked so that you cannot copy them.
Copy the entire original user profiles folder from the original location to the new location (e.g. C:\Users\* to D:\Users\). (See next step after copy starts).
There are a few things to note during this copy. There were thousands of .TMP files that were locked and would not copy. I just skipped these files. I held down Alt-S so that I could see all of the skipped files and make sure that there were only .TMP files being skipped. Yes, this took a little while, but at least I was confident that I got all of my files copied. This process could probably be made easier using the command prompt or powershell.
If, in your case, there are some files that will not copy, you can run procexp.exe, which is file provided by sysinternals. Then do a Find Handle and search for part of the filename. procexp will tell you which programs are locking the file. As long as you closed as many programs as you could, though, this should not happen.
Find and download a program that will do a Search & Replace on the registry. I will not suggest one because I did not find one single program that worked perfectly. I ended up downloading a few different freeware applications and using all of them.
Using the Registry Search & Replace program, do a search for the original user profile folder and replace it with the new user profile folder (e.g. search for “C:\Users” and replace with “D:\Users”. Note that some of the applications I used would only change values and not key names. However, the keys that needed to be chagned were all related to MuiCache. I do not know if these actually need to be updated. I did just to make sure.
Log out. Log back in with the same user. Repeat step 14 until there is nothing left to replace. The reason for this step is that on logout, some programs seem to update the registry using the old user profile path.
Run regedit.exe and do a search for the original user profile path and make sure it does not exist. The reason for this step is because (as noted in step 13), I did not trust any of the Registry Search & Replace programs I used. I ended up needing to update about a dozen of the keys and values manually, since the search & replace missed them.
So that you can easily find programs that do not use the registry and hard-coded profile paths, rename your original profile folder (e.g. rename C:\Users to C:\~Users).
Log out. Log back in as your usual user. Everything should be working correctly except for programs that use a “hardcoded” user profile location.
There are two easy methods that can be used to find programs that use a “hardcoded” profile location and are still looking for the original user profile path. You can use the procexp.exe trick mentioned above and search for handles in the original profile location. You can also monitor the oringal profile location to see if any new folders or files were created. For example, in my case, FolderShare created some folders and files in the directory C:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Local\FolderShare\. So, I updated the FolderShare settings to point to the different path and then deleted the C:\Users directory (note that C:\~Users still existed as a backup).
Since you are now confident that all of your data has been moved (right??????), you can deleted the backup of the original user profile location (e.g. C:\~Users).

The ++ and -- operators apply to one operand (they're unary operators). The expression ++i adds 1 to i, and stores the incremented result back in i. This means that these operators don't just compute new values; they also modify the value of some variable. (They share this property--modifying some variable--with the assignment operators; we can say that these operators all have side effects. That is, they have some effect, on the side, other than just computing a new value.)

The incremented (or decremented) result is also made available to the rest of the expression, so an expression like

k = 2 * ++i
means ``add one to i, store the result back in i, multiply it by 2, and store that result in k.'' (This is a pretty meaningless expression; our actual uses of ++ later will make more sense.)
Both the ++ and -- operators have an unusual property: they can be used in two ways, depending on whether they are written to the left or the right of the variable they're operating on. In either case, they increment or decrement the variable they're operating on; the difference concerns whether it's the old or the new value that's ``returned'' to the surrounding expression. If you want to increment i (that is, add one to it, and store the result back in i), either use

Don't try to use some bizarre combination.
Did it matter whether we used ++i or i++ in this last example? Remember, the difference between the two forms is what value (either the old or the new) is passed on to the surrounding expression. If there is no surrounding expression, if the ++i or i++ appears all by itself, to increment i and do nothing else, you can use either form; it makes no difference.

Microsoft has cut the price of leasing software by as much as 25 percent

One special promotion is 'Simplify and Save', which offers savings of 15 percent for those who consolidate at least two existing license agreements into an Open Value agreement. Microsoft said the discount will run for the entire length of a three-year license deal.

Another offer is for between 15 percent and 25 percent off the price of the licence and the Software Assurance costs of running Exchange Server, Office Communications Server, SQL Server, Office SharePoint Server, Visual Studio, Office Project and other Microsoft software.It is a condition of some Microsoft licence agreements that companies take out schemes such as Microsoft Software Assurance in order to keep their software properly licensed, and therefore eligible for upgrades and promotions. Industry estimates suggest this situation can add as much as £100 a year per PC to the cost of running applications.
The cuts are similar to those that Microsoft has made on the cost of licensing specific products. The Microsoft Office Project Assurance Pack's price has been cut by 25 percent, and Microsoft Project Server 2007 has seen a similar price fall.

According to one analyst, when it comes to special offers, Microsoft does not tell enough people about them. "This is good news for users but Microsoft should be shouting about offers like this," said Tony Lock, analyst with Freeform Dynamics. "Software Assurance is not widely recognized and deals like this, which seems pretty much across the board of Microsoft software, should be better known."

Lock said that, while Microsoft has good market share, it is "not nearly as good as it could or should be, given offers like this".

A dual core processor

Dual-core refers to a CPU that includes two complete execution cores per physical processor. It combines two processors and their caches and cache controllers onto a single integrated circuit (silicon chip). It is basically two processors, in most cases, residing reside side-by-side on the same die.

In a single-core or traditional processor the CPU is fed strings of instructions it must order, execute, then selectively store in its cache for quick retrieval. When data outside the cache is required, it is retrieved through the system bus from random access memory (RAM) or from storage devices. Accessing these slows down performance to the maximum speed the bus, RAM or storage device will allow, which is far slower than the speed of the CPU. The situation is compounded when multi-tasking. In this case the processor must switch back and forth between two or more sets of data streams and programs. CPU resources are depleted and performance suffers.

Dual-processor, Dual-core, and Multi-core:
Dual-processor (DP) systems are those that contains two separate physical computer processors in the same chassis. In dual-processor systems, the two processors can either be located on the same motherboard or on separate boards.
In a dual-core configuration, an integrated circuit (IC) contains two complete computer processors. Usually, the two identical processors are manufactured so they reside side-by-side on the same die, each with its own path to the system front-side bus.
Multi-core is somewhat of an expansion to dual-core technology and allows for more than two separate processors.

A dual core processor is different from a multi-processor system.
In the latter there are two separate CPUs with their own resources. In the former, resources are shared and the cores reside on the same chip. A multi-processor system is faster than a system with a dual core processor, while a dual core system is faster than a single-core system, all else being equal.

In a dual core processor each core handles incoming data strings simultaneously to improve efficiency. Just as two heads are better than one, so are two hands. Now when one is executing the other can be accessing the system bus or executing its own code.

To utilize a dual core processor, the operating system must be able to recognize multi-threading and the software must have simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) written into its code. SMT enables parallel multi-threading wherein the cores are served multi-threaded instructions in parallel. Without SMT the software will only recognize one core. Adobe Photoshop is an example of SMT-aware software. SMT is also used with multi-processor systems common to servers.

A dual-core processor has many advantages especially for those looking to boost their system's multitasking computing power. Complete optimization for the dual-core processor requires both the operating system and applications running on the computer to support a technology called thread-level parallelism, or TLP. Thread-level parallelism is the part of the OS or application that runs multiple threads simultaneously, where threads refer to the part of a program that can execute independently of other parts.

Even without a multithread-enabled application, you will still see benefits of dual-core processors if you are running an OS that supports TLP. For example, if you have Microsoft Windows XP (which supports multithreading), you could have your Internet browser open along with a virus scanner running in the background, while using Windows Media Player to stream your favorite radio station and the dual-core processor will handle the multiple threads of these programs running simultaneously with an increase in performance and efficiency.

Today Windows XP and hundreds of applications already support multithread technology, especially applications that are used for editing and creating music files, videos and graphics because types of programs need to perform operations in parallel.

For the average user the difference in performance will be most noticeable in multi-tasking until more software is SMT aware. Servers running multiple dual core processors will see an appreciable increase in performance.

Multi-core processors are the goal and as technology shrinks, there is more "real-estate" available on the die. In the fall of 2004 Bill Siu of Intel predicted that current accommodating motherboards would be here to stay until 4-core CPUs eventually force a changeover to incorporate a new memory controller that will be required for handling 4 or more cores.

Stardock Fences is a free program that allows you to draw “fences” around groups of desktop icons which then become movable and resizable containers for your desktop icons. The fenced area becomes shaded in color and can be resized and moved around easily.

To use the program, simply hold down the right mouse button and draw a box around the icons you want to group. Once you release the button you will get an option to create a Fence and label it. The label either appears at the top of the Fence, always visible, or you can make it show up as a tooltip. The colors and transparency of the shaded area can be customized.

Additionally, when you double click on the desktop all the icons vanish. Double click again to reveal them. This “helps you finally appreciate the wallpaper you have hiding behind all that clutter.” Fences integrate with the context menu allowing you edit, rename and lock a Fence directly by right clicking on it. How to Crack a Window's Password in 5 Minutes

To find the Window's password, you'll need a program called Ophcrack. It is completely free, and works very well. Ophcrack is not really a program--it is a LiveCD that is burned to a blank CD (or a USB flash drive if using on a newer computer

Installing

Navigate to the official Ophcrack website at http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ -- download the Live CD ISO and save it to your computer. Once it is downloaded, you will need to burn the disc image to a blank CD. The software used will vary--if your system doesn't have burning software already installed, you can download a trial of Nero, or something free like ImgBurn. Burn it at a low speed.

Using
The Live CD will start and the rainbow tables will automatically start working at the password. For the average users password, it will likely take about five seconds to crack. For a longer alphanumeric password, it could take a few minutes, but that is the exception, not the rule.

Once it finds the password, write it down somewhere, then remove the CD and restart the system. Enter the password at login and then change/remove it to whatever you would like

How to Install Brushes, Filters, and and Plugins in GIMP

To add brushes, filters, and plugins to GIMP, simply open the program folder and put the files into their appropriate folders--brushes into Brushes, filters into Filters, etc. In Mac, right click and open the app folder. In Linux, navigate to your Home Folder and press Ctrl+H. In Windows, it's in C:/Program Files/Gimp.

Arrange the Layout

GIMP has compromised and changed the layout to be the best of both worlds. If you enjoy the free floating windows so common in GIMP, those features are still available. If, however, you want everything to be contained in one window, simply maximize the menu window, and then place the toolbar and window dock inside. Right click and choose "Always on top". It will now function just the same as Photoshop's all-in-one window; the individual docks aren't all listed in the bottom, they are all contained within the one window.

Add Photoshop Plugin Support

If you've invested in a library of Photoshop plugins, then the last thing you'll want to do is leave them behind when you switch. Luckily, it is possible to add support for Photoshop plugins using the PSPI plugin.

Download the PSPI plugin for your operating system and copy the file(s) to your GIMP plugins folder. The menu feature can be found in Filters > Photoshop Plug-in.

Higher Bit Support

Navigate to Colors > Use GEGL and check the box next to it.

Add Brushes

While you're adding everything to your install, download a bunch of brushes and add them to your brush folder. The default brushes that come with GIMP aren't all that great. A good resource for brushes is Blendfu.

Conclusion

The above will add a few extra features to GIMP that increases it's functionality. It doesn't have all the features of Photoshop, many of them due to copyright issues. For the vast majority of users, however, GIMP is a very good graphics program that will do everything you need.

Running Photoshop plug-ins in GIMP

Pspi is a GIMP plug-in that runs 3rd-party Photoshop plug-in filters

Photoshop plug-in filters are actually Windows DLLs, which are dynamically loaded into the plug-in host process's address space. They are files with the extension .8bf, though, not .dll.Unlike GIMP plug-ins, 3rd-party Photoshop plug-ins don't use any common user interface library. (GIMP plug-ins use GTK+, obviously.)

Windows

The Windows package includes just pspi.exe. Put it in your GIMP plug-ins folder.

Linux

The Linux packages include three files:

README.linux
pspi, a small shell script
pspi.exe.so, the binary that wine runs

Copy pspi and pspi.exe.so to your personal GIMP plug-ins folder, typically ~/.gimp-2.4/plug-ins .

When you run GIMP it will issue a warning "wire_read(): error" as pspi.exe.so can't be started directly. (The pspi script can, though, and is from GIMP's point of view a GIMP plug-in.) This warning is harmless (GIMP just ignores that file then), but if you want to avoid it, move pspi.exe.so somewhere else and modify the pspi script to point to its new location instead.

After starting GIMP, go to the Xtns:Photoshop Plug-in Settings and enter the folder where you are going to keep the 3rd-party Photoshop plug-ins (.8bf files) that you want to use in GIMP.

Preferrably you should use an initially empty folder for this, and then install (copy) Photoshop plug-ins there one by one, verifying that each works. It isn't really useful to rush and install a shitload of Photoshop plug-ins at once and assume they all will work under pspi.

There is also a tarball with the object files. You can try to use those if the binaries don't work on your distro. Use winegcc to link, add the gimp plug-in libraries (output of pkg-config --libs gimp-2.0), -ladvapi32 and -lgdi32. Check the src/Makefile.am for details.

If you think that learning to program is simply a matter of a programming language you are very wrong.

I am going to start on the basis that you are writing your programs for a customer. He or she has problem and would like you to write a program to solve it. We shall assume that the customer knows even less about computers than we do!
Initially we are not even going to talk about the programming language, type of
computer or anything like that, we are simply going to make sure that we know what the
customer wants.

Solving the Wrong Problem
Many software projects have failed
because the problem that they solved was the wrong one. The developers of the system
quite simply did not find out what was required, but instead created what they thought
was required.
This is a kind of self discipline. Programmer’s pride themselves on their ability to
come up with solutions, so as soon as they are given a problem they immediately start
thinking of ways to solve it, this almost a reflex action. What you should do is think
"Do I really understand what the problem is?". Before you solve a problem you
should make sure that you have a watertight definition of what the problem is, which both you and the customer agree on. In the real world this is sometimes called a
Functional Design Specification or FDS. This tells you exactly what the customer
wants. Both you and the customer sign it, and the bottom line is that if you provide a
system which behaves according to the design specification the customer must pay
you. Once you have got your design specification, then you can think about ways of
solving the problem. Writing an FDS forces you to think about your problem at a very detailed level.

Once I setup Forwarding to one of my Account, and all were seem working fine.
When that email is shut down, I disabled the Forwarding service. Though I always received failure notice that was causing from sending to old and shut down email. There were no email address in forwarding service.

Adobe has announced that they’ve recorded 100 million successful installations of Adobe AIR,the company’s cross-platform runtime environment for RIAs, at the same time boasting that the newest version of Adobe Flash Player (10) was installed on over half of computers worldwide in just the first two months of its release.

Adobe says the 100 million mark for Adobe AIR installs is a minimum for the total install base of the AIR runtime (read: they think it’s actually more than that) since they only count the ones that are deemed 100% successful (i.e. they can be confirmed by code running after the installation). As for developers building Web applications using the Adobe Flash Platform, the company claims that in the last 12 months there have been over 1 million downloads of the AIR software development kit (SDK), open source Flex framework and Adobe Flex Builder.
Based on the results of a Millward Brown survey, Adobe also boasts that Flash Player 10 has been installed on 55% of computers worldwide, and they expect to surpass 80% penetration by next quarter. In total, no less than 99% of internet-enabled desktops are said to have at least some version of Flash Player installed.

TaggedFrog is a free utility that allows you to tag any files on your hard disk by keyword and access or filter them through a tag cloud. File tagging is one of those simple, straightforward ideas that make me wonder why it is not simply built into the operating system to begin with. TaggedFrog will tag images but goes further to tagging any and every file on your hard drive.

Here are more notes on this program:

The user interface: looks very polished and sleek but takes a little getting used to. Should have been more user friendly, really, but you will soon get the hang of it. TaggedFrog is a standalone program that does not integrate into the context menu or the filesystem.
What is tagged: you can tag any type of file, irrespective of where it resides on your hard drive. Tagging is done by dragging and dropping your files into the interface (or dragging already-tagged-files back to the upper pane to tag them further). Folders cannot be tagged.
The tags: can be anything that you type in. If you type in multiple words TaggedFrog will assume each word is a distinct tag unless you surround them with quotes (e.g. “project alpha” with the quotes is a single tag).
Filters: these are groups of file extensions (e.g. “.zip, .rar, .cab, .7z”) that can be used to further filter your results. So for example say you click on “ebooks” then “comics” in your tag cloud, you could then filter the resulting set further by, say, PDF or “.CBZ, .CBR” if you are looking for that particular type of ebook.
Favorites: are merely a collection of tags. You could set these up so you could quickly access them in the sidebar.
Tag cloud: note that the size of the labels in the tag cloud by default is dependent on your most commonly used tags (i.e. the tags you click on the most will grow largest). You could change this in the settings to reflect the number of entries that exists for each tag instead.
Memory consumption: takes up anywhere between 30 to 40 megs but this program uses the .NET framework and therefore its memory consumption is
inflated as a consequence.
Portable version: is available (although the program requires the .NET framework to be installed in order to run).

The user interface is completely customizable. You can hide or show as many of the featured windows, dock them in other places or let them float as free standing windows. The same is true for the tool bars as well. You can even move buttons from toolbars to other toolbars and assign your own short cuts keys.

Microsoft attributed all this to weak demand for personal computers that run its Windows operating system and Office software.

The news sent Microsoft shares down by more than 8 percent on Thursday morning.

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said his company was not immune to the effects of the economy, but he was confident in the strength of Microsoft product portfolio and soundness of its approach.

"We will continue to manage expenses and invest in long-term opportunities to deliver value to customers and shareholders, and we will emerge an even stronger industry leader than we are today," he said.

Seven worthy Google Notebook replacements

Google is discontinuing development on its Notebook service, it may leave a few people looking for a viable replacement. The good news is that there are a handful of really solid products that do the same thing, and in some cases--do it better. Here's a list of seven of our favorites, in no particular order.

1. Evernote

Evernote has a few big things going for it, the main one being its cross-platform architecture which lets you access and add to your Evernotes from multiple devices. It also has optical character recognition, which means any photos you send in will be scanned for text, which gets indexed for searching.

Serious desktop users will most likely want to download the local client, which enables you to create and edit notes even when you don't have an Internet connection. There's also a browser plug-in that lets you clip entire Web pages, or simply bits of them, to save for later.

If you want to get at Evernote on your phone there are clients for both the iPhone and Windows Mobile handsets. Both let you access your notes collection and create new ones right from your device. This includes things like voice messages and snapshots from your phone's built-in camera and microphone.

The service is free to use up to a certain amount of data per month, which you can easily go over if you intend to use it for archiving high-resolution photo scans or for storing large files. However, if you're just using it for quick notes, and a few photos and Web clippings you'll be well under the limit.

Shortly after the news that Google Notebook was ceasing development, Evernote announced it would soon be providing an escape hatch for users to export their stuff over to Evernote free of charge.

2. Zoho Notebook

Zoho's Notebook is probably one of the best services for ex-Google Notebookers to flock to if only for its collaborative features. Several people can work on the same notebook at once, and it combines a handful of Zoho's other Web productivity services into one place. For instance, you can drop in a presentation from Zoho Show, add a video from YouTube, Viddler, Vimeo, or any other site that uses embed code, as well as upload files from your desktop to share or squirrel away on Zoho's servers.

Additionally there's live chat with other Zoho users and collaborators, voice recording, and the capability to link to other notebooks within any notebook.

Its learning curve may be a bit steep for Google Notebook users unfamiliar with other Zoho products, but one thing that might help is the optional browser extension (for IE and Firefox) that lets users clip bits of Web pages to send to specific notebooks.

3. Clipmarks

If you were never really big into Google Notebook's writing feature, you'll probably dig Clipmarks. Once installed in your browser you can start clipping bits and pieces of any page you're on. These get stored in a central archive that you're able to search and browse through from any computer.

Like Google Notebook, Clipmarks lets you team up with other people to create a repository for various clippings. You can group together with these folks and send certain clippings to the shared space right when you're clipping them.

Where Clipmarks trumps Google Notebook is with its sharing, by letting you publish your clipping for the entire Clipmarks community to see and comment on.

4. Ubernote

Ubernote is right up there in both matching and surpassing the utility of Google Notebook. Like Google Notebook you can use it to grab bits and pieces of pages you're on, or simply as a storage space for collaborative writing and bookmarking. It also employs tags to let you sort and search through your content.

Ubernote works in all major browsers, has both an installable toolbar and a bookmarklet that lets you do the clipping. You can access it from the Web or on your mobile phone, and everything you create can be shared with others both in public and private groups.

One thing that makes Ubernote particularly attractive is that it lets you download your notes as an HTML file. This can be squirreled away on your hard drive or as an attachment in an e-mail due to its small size.

5. Springnote

Springnote takes a wiki-like approach to group notebooks. Like Google's effort you can keep a notebook personal or work on it with others. It's also entirely Web-based and employs tags and a quick search engine that lets you browse and sort through your work.

Springnote offers a much richer text editor than Google Notebook does. Like Zoho Notebook it also lets you insert all sorts of random media objects from anywhere on the Web or from your desktop. This includes document files that can be converted into Springnote notebooks. Like Ubernote, notebooks can be exported into HTML files for archiving or sharing.

In addition to its Web editor, there's also a free iPhone application that lets you view and edit your Springnote pages. You can use it to send photos you've taken to any one of your notebooks.

Springnote's one limitation is the 2GB cap per account, which you might run up on quickly if you're using it to store media files.

6. Delicious

If you were using Google Notebook specifically to save and share bookmarks you'll likely be pleased with Yahoo's Delicious service. It's got a huge user base, and a really excellent browser plug-in that lets you access your Web bookmarks just like they were on your local machine.

Like Google Notebook, the power of Delicious revolves around its tagging system. In Delicious' case you get the added benefit of the community, so if you're saving a site that other people have visited and tagged you can see what tags they used, and pick them for yourself.

Two things that Delicious is not able to do that you might have used Google Notebook for is saving bits and pieces of sites you're on, and creating and editing text. For that you're better off with one of the tools above.

7. Magnolia

Magnolia, like Delicious, is focused on communal bookmarking. Magnolia's big claim to fame is that it uses both tags and a five-star system that lets users rate various bookmarks. It also has groups by interest, where users can pool together related groupmarks for others to reference.

If you liked that Google Notebook saved pages you clipped in a "timeless" state, you'll dig that Magnolia does the same thing, except with entire pages at the time you bookmark them. It doesn't work on every site, but is a great way to link to something that may not be up forever.

Again, like with Delicious, you're missing out on the option to make a task list or jot anything down--it's purely for bookmarks.

Here are my top EIGHT favorite features that Q-Dir provides:
1- Manage your files across multiple panes: all programs of this type offer this, but Q-Dir gets the prize for most intuitive implementation whereby it allows you to select the arrangement of panes that you want by clicking on small icons in the toolbar. The Q Dir people deserve credit for this interface which works extremely well.

2- Access frequently used folders (quicklinks): you can have instant access to your favorite folders and organize them within a folder structure. Note that this is different from saving ’favorites’ (see next point).

3- Save “Favorites”: as in, save a view comprising multiple folders across a particular distribution of panes. So let’s say that for a project you like to work with the “deskop” folder in the left hand pane and two panes on the right hand side showing “Folder A” on top and “Folder B” on the bottom; Q Dir allows you to save this entire configuration as a favorite. You can also save this as an object on the desktop, whereby double clicking this file will immediately open all of these folders in the configuration they were saved.

4- Filter box: you can access a filter box in the lower right hand corner of each pane in order to hone in on a file or group of files that you want to work with. The version I reviewed recently implemented an “always wildcard” option whereby anything you type is wildcarded (i.e. type in .mp3 and the program assumes *.mp3*) - very cool.

5- Installs an “open with QDir” shell extension: optional (see screenshot). From the “Extras” menu go to “System” then check “Add Q-Dir to the shell context menu”.

6- Works very well as a direct replacement to Explorer: I am now using Q-Dir in place of the default Windows Explorer and am extremely happy with it. Like Windows Explorer you can set Q-Dir to open to a single pane by default and to list the folder name in the title bar. One thing to consider, though, is that Q-Dir takes up approx 10-12 megs in memory, and opening multiple windows will launch multiple instances of the program whose overall memory use can add up. If you want to use Q-Dir as a replacement to Explorer do the following: add Q-Dir to the context menu (see point#5 above) then open any folder normally in Windows Explorer; next go to Tools, Folder Options, ’File Types’ tab then scroll down to “Folder” in the list. Once highlighted click advanced, select “*Q-Dir” and then click on “Set Default”. Q-Dir will now be the default program used to open any folder. Note: to revert back to Explorer, go through the same process and re-select “open” as default.

7- Uses the default Explorer context menu and column views: I like this as I am pretty invested in what I install in my PCs right click context menu and am sometimes dismayed when a “file manager” type apps takes over with it’s own context menu. I also like that it will use the columns enabled in explorer, which means that it will work with some Explorer extensions such as Folder Size and HobComment that customize column views.

8- Portable: either run the installer then check “portable-install” or simply rename Q-Dir_Installer.exe to Q-Dir.exe if you want a portable version.
Other features:

Color filters: you can optionally define a standard font color for each displayed file type or for folders (e.g. list all .zip files in red, .mp3 files in blue, etc.). Q-Dir comes with a pre-defined color scheme that you can change at will, or switch off color coding altogether (which is my preference).
Media file previews: Q-Dir supports (optional) previews for media files (including video, audio, and images) and PDF. Two caveats here (1) you will need to have the appropriate codec installed to see video, and (2) you apparently need Adobe Reader installed to preview PDF (I have PDF-Exchange Viewer and PDF previews do not display).
Zip files: Q-Dir provides the ability to browse and perform file operations on zip folders seamless just as you would a normal folder.
Export: files and directory structure to XLS, CSV, TXT, and HTML.Other features: keyboard shortcuts for most functions, quick online searches for selected files or objects, an on-screen magnifier, and others.

Wish list (or how this program can be even better):

Calculating folder sizes: for all folders by default or for selected folders (in the absence of this you could use the Folder Size extension in conjunction with Q-Dir to get this.
The ability to “swap” visible folders between panes: this is a mainstay of most programs like this one, strangely absent here.

The verdict: this is definitely one of my favorite file management/explorer replacement programs. I have been using Q-Dir to replace Windows explorer for about a week now and am very happy with the functionality that it provides as well as it’s speed and responsiveness. Previously I had been using the excellent UltraExplorer, and while you cannot compare the two programs directly (UltraExplorer is much more feature rich and a more complex program overall), I found Q-Dir more suitable as a direct replacement for windows explorer because it was in fact much more responsive. Overall I can say that Q-Dir manages to strike a perfect balance between providing a host of excellent features and functions while maintaining a very good interface design and a good user experience.

WordPress ကို ပိုျမင့္တဲ့ version upgrade လုပ္မယ္ဆိုရင္

လက္ရွိအသံုးျပဳေနတဲ့ WordPress ကို ပိုျမင့္တဲ့ version upgrade လုပ္မယ္ဆိုရင္ ပထမဆံုး backup ကို ေသခ်ာ လုပ္ထားရပါမယ္။ Dashboard / Manage / Export ကေန xml format နဲ႕ backup တစ္ခု မရွိမျဖစ္ လုပ္ထားရပါမယ္။ http://wordpress.org/download က upgrade လုပ္ခ်င္တဲ့ wordpress ေနာက္ဆံုးဗားရွင္း ကို ေဒါင္းလုပ္ခ်ပါ။ မိမိအသံုးျပဳေနတဲ့ hosting က file manager နဲ႕ ျဖစ္ျဖစ္၊ zip ေျဖၿပီး ftp software နဲ႕ျဖစ္ျဖစ္ wordpress install လုပ္ထားတဲ့ folder ထဲကို upload တင္ပါ။ ဥပမာ။ ။ byethost မွာတင္ထားတဲ့ wordpress ဆိုရင္ urblogname/htdocs ေအာက္ကိုေပါ့။ plugins ေတြ themes ေတြ တင္တဲ့ ပံုစံမ်ိဳး အတိုင္းပါပဲ။ အရင္ရွိၿပီးသား ဗားရွင္းအေဟာင္းက ဖိုင္ေတြကို over wirte လုပ္မလားလို႕ ေမးခဲ့ရင္ yes ေပးလိုက္ပါ။ အားလံုးၿပီးရင္ web browser နဲ႕ http://urblogname/wp-admin/upgrade.php ကိုဖြင့္လိုက္ပါ။ urblogname ေနရာက မိမိ blog နာမည္ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ဥပမာ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တို႕၏စပ္မိစပ္ရာ ဘေလာ့ဂ္ဆိုရင္ http://smsy.iblogger.org/wp-admin/upgrade.php ေပါ့ဗ်ာ။ ဖြင့္လို႕ရၿပီဆိုရင္ ပံုစံ ၂ ျဖစ္ႏိုင္ပါတယ္။ database upgrade လုပ္စရာ မလိုတဲ့ အဆင္ျမင့္တာမ်ိဳး ဆိုရင္ No Upgrade Required ဆိုၿပီး တတ္လာမွာျဖစ္ပါတယ္ Continue ႏွိပ္ေပးယံုပါပဲ။ database upgrade လုပ္ဖို႕လိုတယ္ ဆိုရင္ေတာ့ Upgrade WordPress ဆိုၿပီး ေပၚလာပါမယ္ သူေပးထားတဲ့ အတိုင္း click လုပ္ေပးၿပီးရင္ upgrade လုပ္တာ ေအာင္ျမင္ပါၿပီ။

What is spyware?

Spyware is software that is capable of performing certain operations on your computer without your consent, such as displaying advertisements, collecting your personal information, or changing the configuration of your computer.

What is malware?

Spyware will exploit your computer of anything it can use for monetary gain, for as long as it can remain attached to the host. Spyware is content to sit on a single computer, to monitor what the user does, as is the case with tracking adware; or influence where the user visits, as is the case with targeting advertisers who use browser helper objects that pop-up ads, substitute search engines, and hijack home pages.

Viruses can be intentionally destructive and have been known to erase or corrupt file systems or abet denial of service attacks. Spyware is more interested in having the host remain healthy: a non-functional computer has neither advertising value nor revenue potential to spyware. So spyware typically remains non-destructive, unless you try to remove it. But many spyware packages are removal resistant: you may uninstall them only to find they reappear when you reboot your computer. Others modify many critical components of a computer operating system and incomplete removal often renders the computer inoperable.

How to keep spyware off of my computer?

Here are few useful tips on how to avoid spyware infection:

* Use anti-spyware programs such as Spyware Terminator.
* Keep your anti-spyware programs current by downloading updates.
* If using Microsoft's Internet Explorer, turn off its ability to run scripts without your permission.
* Prevent spyware from transmitting data off the system by using a firewall.
* Do not click on links within pop-ups. By clicking on a pop-up link you may install spyware on your computer. Close the popup with the "X" on the title bar, do not use the "close" link, if there are any available within the window.
* Do not download programs from websites you are not familiar with.
* Be careful of unexpected dialog boxes asking whether you want to perform an action. If you are not sure about the impact of the action, better click "NO" or close the dialog box by clicking the "X" icon in the title bar.
* Do not follow email links offering anti-spyware software. These links may actually install the spyware they claim to be keeping off your system.

Is there any legal protection against spyware?

Although the Can-Spam law that has been in effect for a year, it hasn't had much success against unsolicited email. Legal experts and business technology professionals remain hopeful that laws aimed at reducing adware and spyware will fare somewhat better.

States are moving forward in crafting anti-spyware legislation. A former Governor of Utah signed into law the Spyware Control Act that bans the installation of spyware without the user's consent. A similar law went into effect in California enforcing a $1,000 penalty per violation. At the 109th Congress recently convened Rep. Mary Bono, R-Calif., reintroduced her anti-spyware bill that includes civil fines up to $3 million for violators.

Still, Michael Overly, a technology attorney with the law firm of Foley & Lardner, says that the new laws aren't entirely necessary because the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act already makes it illegal for unauthorized system intrusions. Other legal experts point out that Title 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act enables the FTC to track down anyone conducting deceptive trade practices, and the Electronic Communications Privacy Act also could be used against those who send out spyware.

Product ID : A 25- character unique key supplied with the installation media

Spyware

Adware

Trojans
A program that comes in secretly and quietly, but it carries a destructive payload. Once you become infected by the worm or virus that that Trojan carries into your computer, it can be very difficult to repair the damage. Web bug or Web beacons Also called a Web bug or a pixel tag or a clear GIF. Used in combination with cookies, a Web beacon is an often-transparent graphic image, usually no larger than 1 pixel x 1 pixel, that is placed on a Web site or in an e-mail that is used to monitor the behavior of the user visiting the Web site or sending the e-mail. Active Directory Federation Service – allows administrators to easily set up trust relationships with federation partners.
Read-Only Domain Controllers - these domain controllers will be used in environments where you need a domain controller but you cannot guarantee the physical security of the server.
Server Core Installation - a new type of install of Windows Server 2008 that will allow you to only install the typical Windows network infrastructure services – DHCP, DNS, file sharing, and domain controller functions. What is a big change for most admins is that if you choose to use the “server core” installation, there will be no local GUI interface to the OS.
Password and account lockout policy improvements – offers the ability to have multiple password and account policies in a single domain.
Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption - allows you to encrypt all of the hard drives on a server. This will prevent the data from being viewed if a hard drive or the server is stolen.

Terminal Services Gateway - allows remote users who are working away from the office to connect to terminal services. This will help remove the need for remote VPN access for some users.
Terminal Services Web Access – offers the ability for remote users to connect to terminal services with just a web browser. By using this, remote PCs attempting to connect to terminal services do not need to have the remote desktop client or VPN.

With this feature, Microsoft is hoping to take away a great deal of the virtualization marketplace from VMware. While Microsoft certainly lags far behind VMware in the maturing of their virtualization offerings, by Microsoft offering virtualization already built into the Windows OS, they are going a long way to getting their version of virtualization in the hands of the end user.
As we are just now getting a look at Microsoft’s version of Hypervisor virtualization in the recently released Windows Server 2008 RC0, it is too soon to say how good of a virtualization feature set Microsoft will offer. I encourage you to take a look at it for yourself.
